In 2018, Constellation Theater Company commissioned Wytold to write an original score to be performed by a solo cellist for their production of Sara Ruhl’s “Melancholy Play: A Contemporary Farce.” In the composition process, Wytold worked with director Nick Martin to create cello lines that were frequently interrupted by arpeggiations that distanced the listener from the melodies in the same way that the main character felt distanced from the world around her due to her melancholy. Wytold also wrote two vocal songs for the cast, marking Wytold’s debut choral compositions.

Performed by cellist Kate Burgman, Wytold’s score was called “excellent musical accompaniment/commentary” by DC Metro Theater Arts. Theater Bloom wrote that “music was a highlight of this production”.
